🚨 KARMELO ANTHONY DENIED A NEW TRIAL

Karmelo Anthony, Austin Metcalf, Crime & Trials, Court Update

— BUT NOW WE KNOW WHAT THE JURY DIDN’T 👀

Karmelo Anthony’s 35-year murder sentence still stands after a judge denied his request for a new trial in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.

But the hearing revealed something that has people looking at this case all over again:

There was information about BOTH teenagers that the original jury never heard.

Court testimony revealed troubling allegations and past behavior involving Karmelo — but also information involving Austin’s history of fighting and an offense involving racist and antisemitic graffiti.

And THAT matters to me.

Not because Austin deserved what happened to him. He absolutely did not, but because for months people have been choosing sides while working with an incomplete picture.

I’m glad more information about both young men is finally public.

A person’s past doesn’t automatically prove what happened underneath that tent, but patterns and previous behavior can provide context. Some people may see Austin differently now. Others may see Karmelo differently. Some may conclude that both teenagers had troubling histories.

My position remains the same:

Austin putting his hands on Karmelo matters.

Karmelo feeling threatened matters.

But taking a life matters too.

I personally believe 35 years is excessive, but I also don’t believe the answer should be no meaningful accountability at all.

⚖️ Sometimes justice isn’t found at either extreme.

FULL STORY--

Karmelo Anthony's attempt to secure a new trial has been denied, meaning his murder conviction and 35-year prison sentence for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf remain in place.

But even though Karmelo didn't get the outcome his attorneys wanted, the hearing accomplished something else:

The public finally learned considerably more about BOTH teenagers.

And some of it wasn't pretty.

What Was Kept From The Jury?

During Karmelo's original trial, prosecutors and his defense had an informal agreement to largely keep the teenagers' previous behavior and character evidence out and concentrate on what happened underneath the tent at the track meet.

The recent hearing pulled back that curtain.

Prosecutors described troubling information concerning Karmelo, including messages involving guns, knives, fighting and violence, as well as allegations involving his behavior toward a former girlfriend.

But there was another side.

Testimony also revealed that Austin had a history of getting into fights. His former defense attorney testified about an offense report involving Austin, his twin brother and another person concerning racist and antisemitic graffiti.

The graffiti described in court included extremely offensive racist language and imagery. The attorney testified that Austin and his twin subsequently received 12 months' probation.

There was also testimony concerning videos and messages that the defense believed demonstrated racist attitudes on Austin's part.

None of this was presented to the jury deciding Karmelo's murder case.

And none of it changes the fact that Austin died after being stabbed in the chest or automatically proves that Karmelo acted lawfully in self-defense.

But it does give us a much fuller picture of the people involved.

💬 Has the information that came out AFTER the trial changed how you see this case?
