When most people picture The Bahamas, they imagine powdery white sand, clear turquoise water and warm tropical sunshine. That picture is accurate—but it represents only one part of the Bahamian experience.

The Bahamas is an archipelago of more than 700 islands and cays, organized by tourism officials into 16 distinctive island destinations. Each offers its own personality, scenery, traditions and pace of life.

Nassau and Paradise Island deliver the excitement of a busy capital, with major resorts, restaurants, shopping, nightlife and excursions. The Family Islands—also called the Out Islands—offer a quieter experience built around small communities, untouched beaches, fishing, boating and a slower island rhythm.

Choosing Your Bahamian Experience

There is no single way to experience The Bahamas.

Visitors who enjoy a lively atmosphere may prefer Nassau and Paradise Island, where they can combine beach days with sightseeing, restaurants, entertainment and nightlife.

Travellers looking for something more relaxed may feel at home in Eleuthera, Exuma, Long Island, Cat Island, Andros, Bimini, San Salvador, Abaco or another Family Island. Each island has something different to offer—from blue holes and dramatic cliffs to pink-sand beaches, coral reefs, fishing settlements and secluded stretches of shoreline.

This is why visiting Nassau does not mean that you have seen all of The Bahamas. Every island tells a different story.

Taste the Real Bahamas

One of the best ways to understand Bahamian culture is through the food.

In Nassau, Arawak Cay—better known as The Fish Fry—is one of the most popular places to sample traditional dishes in a casual and energetic setting. The area features Bahamian restaurants and food vendors serving made-to-order conch salad, fried fish and other local favourites.

• Conch salad: Fresh conch mixed with tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers, citrus juice and seasonings.
• Cracked conch: Tenderized conch that is battered and fried.

• Bahamian peas and rice: A seasoned rice dish commonly served with fish, chicken, pork or other entrées.
• Boil fish: Fish simmered with potatoes, onions, citrus and hot pepper, often served for breakfast.
• Stew fish: Fish served in a rich, deeply seasoned gravy.
• Grilled or fried fish: Freshly prepared snapper, grouper and other locally available fish.

Do not overlook the smaller restaurants, roadside food stands and island fish fries. Some of the most memorable meals in The Bahamas are served in relaxed places where recipes have been passed down through generations.

Order an Island Drink

A tropical drink is almost expected while relaxing near the water.

Visitors will often see Bahama Mamas, Goombay Smashes and Yellow Birds on cocktail menus. For something non-alcoholic, try a fruit punch, coconut water or a cold glass of switcha—our Bahamian-style limeade.

Local beers such as Kalik and Sands are also widely enjoyed. Just remember to drink responsibly, stay hydrated and never operate a boat, jet ski or vehicle after consuming alcohol.

Spend Some Time on the Water

The water surrounding The Bahamas is more than beautiful scenery. It is part of everyday island life.

Depending on the island and the weather, visitors can enjoy:

Snorkelling, scuba diving, boating, sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, parasailing, jet skiing and organised beach excursions.

Some activities are designed for experienced adventurers, while others are suitable for beginners and families. Always use a reputable operator, listen to safety instructions and confirm that weather and sea conditions are appropriate before leaving shore.

Explore Nassau Beyond the Resort

Nassau offers much more than hotels and beaches.

Visitors can explore Downtown Nassau, browse the Straw Market, see historical landmarks, sample local food and learn more about the country’s colonial history and African heritage.

The Straw Market is known for baskets, bags, hats, carvings, souvenirs and other handcrafted or Bahamas-themed items. When shopping, take time to speak with the vendors and look for locally produced pieces.

A trip through Nassau should also include time away from the main tourist areas. Visit a local restaurant, attend a cultural event or take a guided historical tour to experience another side of the capital.

Take an Island Day Trip

Visitors staying in Nassau can use the capital as a starting point for several offshore adventures.

Blue Lagoon Island, also known as Salt Cay, is located approximately three miles northeast of Nassau. It offers beaches, water activities and organised marine experiences reached by boat.

Other operators offer trips to nearby islands, reefs and private beach locations. Packages vary, so travellers should compare what is included, read recent reviews and confirm transportation times before booking.

A day trip can be enjoyable, but it still provides only a glimpse of island life. Travellers who truly want to disconnect should consider spending several nights on a Family Island.

Experience Atlantis Paradise Island

Atlantis Paradise Island remains one of the country’s most recognizable resorts.

Its attractions include Aquaventure, pools, beaches, restaurants, marine exhibits and entertainment. Aquaventure covers approximately 141 acres and includes slides, river rides and resort pools. Non-hotel guests generally require a day pass to access restricted resort attractions.

Because operating hours, access rules and prices can change, visitors should check directly with Atlantis before making plans.

Feel the Rhythm of Junkanoo

A visit to The Bahamas should include an introduction to Junkanoo.

Junkanoo is not simply a parade. It is an expression of Bahamian history, competition, craftsmanship, music and community pride. Groups spend months designing elaborate costumes, rehearsing routines and preparing for the major parades.

The largest celebrations take place on Bay Street in Nassau during the early hours of Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, although Junkanoo events and smaller parades are also held on other islands.

The pounding goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles, brass instruments, colourful costumes and choreographed performances create an experience that cannot be fully appreciated through photographs or videos. You have to feel it.

Do Not Rush the Experience

Cruise passengers often have only a few hours to explore before returning to their ships. That may be enough time for a beach visit, lunch and quick sightseeing tour, but it is not enough time to experience everything Nassau—or the wider Bahamas—has to offer.

A longer stay gives visitors time to explore without rushing, try more local food, support Bahamian-owned businesses and possibly include another island in their itinerary.

The beaches may be the first thing that catches your attention, but The Bahamas is more than a beautiful backdrop. It is the warmth of the people, the flavours of the food, the rhythm of Junkanoo and the differences between every island.

Come for the water, but make time for the culture.

You may discover that one trip is simply not enough.

Nolan Wells’ Independent Autopsy Leaves Cause of Death Undetermined

No fractures or deep-tissue injuries were identified, but the family’s second examination could not determine whether Nolan drowned—or how he entered the water.

The preliminary findings from the Wells family’s independent autopsy have been released—and instead of providing a final answer, they have raised even more questions.

Attorney Ben Crump announced that Nolan Xavier Wells’ cause and manner of death remain “undetermined pending further investigation.” The examination found no fractures, deep-tissue injuries, cuts to the back of his head or damage to the underlying skull. However, the pathologist documented a large area of red discoloration in the soft tissue behind Nolan’s ears and along the back of his head. The cause of that discoloration has not been determined. 

Why the Second Autopsy Was Limited

The independent pathologist explained that Nolan’s body was already significantly decomposed by the time of the second examination, which may have made bruises or abrasions difficult to detect.

Additionally, Nolan’s organs had already been examined and retained during the state’s original autopsy, and his throat structures had been removed as part of that process—procedures the pathologist acknowledged can be standard. Because those areas were unavailable, the independent examination could not fully evaluate Nolan’s lungs, stomach or throat for signs that might help confirm drowning, injury or another cause of death. No separate toxicology testing was performed during the independent autopsy. 

Seven Questions Still Unanswered

The independent report identified several issues that must still be answered:

How did Nolan enter the water? 

Was water found in his airway? 

Was there evidence of neck or internal head trauma? 

What was in his stomach? 

What did toxicology reveal? 

And exactly how and where was his body positioned when it was recovered? 

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s official autopsy and toxicology findings remain pending. 

What the Findings Do—and Do Not—Prove

The independent autopsy does not confirm that Nolan drowned, but it also does not establish that he was assaulted or that foul play occurred. No suspect has been identified, and no charges have been announced.

For now, the most important conclusion is that Nolan’s death remains medically and legally unresolved.

As his mother, Christine Wonsley, asked during the announcement:

“What happened to our son?”

The family sought a second autopsy hoping for clarity. Instead, the findings have reinforced the need for the official autopsy, toxicology results, witness accounts and digital evidence to be examined together. REV. AL SHARPTON, BENJAMIN CRUMP, NOLAN’S FAMILY AND A COMMUNITY OF SUPPORTERS GATHERED TO HONOR THE 18-YEAR-OLD—TURNING A DAY OF GRIEF INTO A POWERFUL CALL FOR ANSWERS AND JUSTICE.

The homegoing service for Nolan Xavier Wells was powerful, emotional and filled with purpose.

Family members, former teammates, classmates, community leaders and supporters gathered at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, dressed in blue to celebrate the life of the 18-year-old college football player whose death after a July 4 trip to Horn Island continues to raise unanswered questions.

Although the service was filled with grief, it was not centered solely on how Nolan died. It focused on how he lived—as a loving son, protective brother, loyal friend, gifted athlete and young man who made others feel welcomed and valued.

Throughout the service, one message stood above the rest:

“Nolan's Life Matter.”

Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, described her son as a gentle and calming presence who had a special ability to make people feel seen.

“He had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed and valued. He could lift your confidence with just a few words and make you feel like you belong.”

She encouraged those attending the service to carry Nolan’s kindness forward.

“In a world that can often feel dark, be like Nolan. Be the light that brightens the lives of those around you. Be the warmth for those who may be feeling the coldness of the world. Love deeply, protect fiercely, and welcome others with kindness.”

Nolan’s father, Elmore Wonsley, remembered the time they spent watching football and practicing together on the beach. He affectionately called his son “Mr. Cool Hands” because Nolan appeared capable of catching a touchdown pass in nearly every game.

Their words reminded everyone that Nolan was much more than a name connected to a developing investigation. He was a beloved son with dreams, talent, personality and a future his family fully expected him to live.

The Rev. Al Sharpton delivered a forceful eulogy that combined faith, comfort and an unmistakable demand for truth.

Sharpton addressed the hateful accusations suggesting that he and civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump were financially benefiting from Nolan’s case.

“First of all, I don’t get any money in any of what we do. Most of the cases that you have seen us do, we help to pay the funerals and all of that, and never ask for a dime back, even if they got settlements.”

Rather than allowing the criticism to distract from Nolan, Sharpton turned the moment into action.

On behalf of the National Action Network, he announced a $50,000 reward for information that helps uncover the truth about what happened to Nolan Wells.

Shortly afterward, filmmaker Tyler Perry, who had already covered Nolan’s funeral expenses, reportedly sent Sharpton a message saying he would match the reward. Perry’s contribution increased the total reward to $100,000. (Atlanta Black Star⁠)

The announcement sent a direct message to anyone who may have photographs, videos, messages or firsthand knowledge of Nolan’s final hours:

The time to speak is now.

During his call for justice, attorney Benjamin Crump thanked the many people who have supported Nolan’s family—both publicly and privately.

Some donors and supporters allowed their names to be announced. Others reportedly assisted the family while choosing to remain anonymous.

Among the publicly recognized supporters was Tyler Perry, who paid Nolan’s funeral expenses after reaching out to the family.

Former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick, through his Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative, funded the independent autopsy requested by Nolan’s family. The independent examination was arranged as the family continued seeking answers separate from the state’s investigation. (People.com⁠)

Media businessman Byron Allen also donated $100,000 directly to the family’s fundraiser. That contribution was separate from the $100,000 reward announced during the funeral. (Variety⁠)

Crump’s acknowledgment made it clear that Nolan’s family has not been left to carry the financial, emotional and legal weight of this tragedy alone.

Nolan’s homegoing was attended by relatives, friends, teammates and national figures, including filmmaker Spike Lee and former NFL player Terrell Owens.

The service celebrated Nolan’s brightest moments through family memories, photographs, music and stories of the warmth he brought into the lives of others. His former football teammates attended together, honoring a young man remembered as both an athlete and a friend. (AP News⁠)

Yet beneath the celebration remained the painful reality that Nolan’s family still does not fully know what happened to him after he traveled to Horn Island on July 4.

Nolan did not return to the mainland with the friends who transported him to the island. His body was discovered two days later near the island’s coast.

Authorities have said the investigation remains active, while Nolan’s family and legal team continue to question inconsistencies surrounding his reported decision to remain behind, the handling of his cellphone and keys, and conflicting accounts of whether he intended to leave with his original group. The words “Nolan's Life Matter” became more than a hashtag during the homegoing.

They represented a declaration that Nolan’s life will not be reduced to speculation, rumors or an unexplained conclusion.

His life mattered before the national interviews.

His life mattered before celebrity supporters became involved.

His life mattered before his name became a hashtag.

And his family’s questions matter now.

The movement surrounding Nolan is not simply about assigning guilt before evidence is established. It is about demanding that every photograph, video, witness statement, digital record and conflicting account be examined thoroughly before any final determination is accepted.

Nolan’s homegoing service may have laid his body to rest, but it did not bring an end to his family’s search for truth.

The service celebrated a young man remembered for his gentle spirit, contagious smile, athletic ability and gift for making others feel valued. It also placed the people who may know something about his final hours on notice.

There is now a $100,000 reward for information, a legal team continuing its independent work and a family supported by people across the country who refuse to let Nolan’s story simply disappear.

Nolan Xavier Wells mattered. His family deserves answers. And until the complete truth is known, the call will continue: Nolan's Life Matter. 🕊
