The homegoing service for Nolan Xavier Wells was powerful, emotional and filled with purpose.
Family members, former teammates, classmates, community leaders and supporters gathered at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, dressed in blue to celebrate the life of the 18-year-old college football player whose death after a July 4 trip to Horn Island continues to raise unanswered questions.
Although the service was filled with grief, it was not centered solely on how Nolan died. It focused on how he lived—as a loving son, protective brother, loyal friend, gifted athlete and young man who made others feel welcomed and valued.
Throughout the service, one message stood above the rest:
“Nolan's Life Matter.”
Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, described her son as a gentle and calming presence who had a special ability to make people feel seen.
“He had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed and valued. He could lift your confidence with just a few words and make you feel like you belong.”
She encouraged those attending the service to carry Nolan’s kindness forward.
“In a world that can often feel dark, be like Nolan. Be the light that brightens the lives of those around you. Be the warmth for those who may be feeling the coldness of the world. Love deeply, protect fiercely, and welcome others with kindness.”
Nolan’s father, Elmore Wonsley, remembered the time they spent watching football and practicing together on the beach. He affectionately called his son “Mr. Cool Hands” because Nolan appeared capable of catching a touchdown pass in nearly every game.
Their words reminded everyone that Nolan was much more than a name connected to a developing investigation. He was a beloved son with dreams, talent, personality and a future his family fully expected him to live.
The Rev. Al Sharpton delivered a forceful eulogy that combined faith, comfort and an unmistakable demand for truth.
Sharpton addressed the hateful accusations suggesting that he and civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump were financially benefiting from Nolan’s case.
“First of all, I don’t get any money in any of what we do. Most of the cases that you have seen us do, we help to pay the funerals and all of that, and never ask for a dime back, even if they got settlements.”
Rather than allowing the criticism to distract from Nolan, Sharpton turned the moment into action.
On behalf of the National Action Network, he announced a $50,000 reward for information that helps uncover the truth about what happened to Nolan Wells.
Shortly afterward, filmmaker Tyler Perry, who had already covered Nolan’s funeral expenses, reportedly sent Sharpton a message saying he would match the reward. Perry’s contribution increased the total reward to $100,000. (Atlanta Black Star)

During his call for justice, attorney Benjamin Crump thanked the many people who have supported Nolan’s family—both publicly and privately.
Some donors and supporters allowed their names to be announced. Others reportedly assisted the family while choosing to remain anonymous.
Among the publicly recognized supporters was Tyler Perry, who paid Nolan’s funeral expenses after reaching out to the family.
Former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick, through his Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative, funded the independent autopsy requested by Nolan’s family. Their return marks an emotional moment for grieving families and a solemn reminder that this tragedy has touched communities across The Bahamas.
Authorities continue working to formally identify each victim, notify relatives, and determine exactly what led to the fatal crash. Officials have asked the public to remain patient as investigators complete their work and to avoid spreading unverified information while families continue to grieve.
For many Bahamians, the arrival of the victims back home is more than a procedural step—it is the beginning of saying goodbye.
UPDATE (Evening, July 10): Officials have now confirmed that all 10 people aboard the aircraft have died. Earlier reports indicated one survivor, but the Prime Minister later confirmed that the individual succumbed to their injuries. Authorities have also identified the aircraft as a Cessna 402 traveling from Nassau to San Andros and announced the temporary suspension of Flamingo Air's Air Operator Certificate while the investigation continues.

The Shirley Street Tragedy That Left A Nation Heartbroken
There are moments when a story becomes more than breaking news.
It becomes a conversation at dinner tables.
A warning between parents and children.
A painful reminder of how quickly life can change.
The Bahamas continues to mourn following the devastating Shirley Street crash that claimed the lives of five young Bahamians and left families, friends, classmates, and communities across the country grieving.
What began as a night out among friends ended in unimaginable heartbreak.
According to police, shortly after midnight on Sunday, June 28, a grey Mazda sedan carrying eight occupants was involved in a single-vehicle collision near the intersection of Shirley Street and Church Street in Nassau.
The vehicle reportedly lost control and crashed into a tree.
Four young women initially lost their lives following the crash, while four others were transported to hospital. Days later, the 25-year-old male passenger who had been fighting for his life in critical condition sadly succumbed to his injuries, bringing the death toll to five.
Eight people started that journey.
Only three survived.
Behind every number was a person.
A child.
A friend.
A classmate.
Someone with plans, dreams, and people waiting for them to come home.
Among those remembered are Diamond Stubbs, Stania Webb, Betrica Brown and Evalena Johnson, four young women whose smiles and accomplishments have since filled timelines across The Bahamas.
Diamond Stubbs, a recent graduate from Cat Island, was remembered as a bright young leader with an incredible future ahead. She had served as head girl and valedictorian of Old Bight High School and was preparing for the next chapter of her journey.
Stania Webb, also connected to Cat Island, was remembered for her talent, her passion for music, and the impact she made on those around her. She had pursued opportunities through education and continued representing the promise of young Bahamian talent.
Betrica Brown was remembered by loved ones as strong, determined and gifted. Despite facing challenges and loss in her young life, she continued pushing forward, excelling in sports and creating a path for herself.
Evalena Johnson was also among the young women whose life was tragically cut short, leaving family and friends mourning the loss of another young Bahamian with a future ahead.
The passing of the fifth victim, a 25-year-old young man who fought for his life after the crash, added another layer of heartbreak to an already devastating tragedy.
A son was also lost.
Another family is now grieving.
The impact has been especially painful for small communities like Cat Island, where a loss like this is not felt by a few people — it is felt by almost everyone.
As families continue to mourn, many Bahamians are also asking difficult questions.
How did eight people end up inside a small sedan?
Were all passengers wearing seat belts?
Did overcrowding affect the outcome?
Could different decisions have changed what happened that night?
These are the questions many people are discussing, but investigators will ultimately determine the facts surrounding the crash.
Police have indicated that speed was a factor. Additional reports have alleged that the 19-year-old driver did not possess a valid driver’s license and was under the influence at the time of the collision. The driver has reportedly been taken into police custody as the investigation continues.

St. Anne’s Member of Parliament Adrian White brought attention to areas of Shirley Street where roadwork, uneven surfaces and damaged sections of the road have caused concern among motorists.
