Jazz Chisholm Jr.: From Nassau’s Ballfields to Baseball’s Biggest Stage

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is more than one of the most recognizable personalities in Major League Baseball. He is a Bahamian success story whose journey began long before the bright lights of Yankee Stadium.

Born in Nassau as Jasrado Hermis Arrington Chisholm Jr., Jazz was introduced to the sport by his grandmother, Patricia Coakley, a former shortstop for The Bahamas’ national softball team. She began practicing soft toss with him when he was only two years old. By 2010, Jazz was part of a Bahamian under-12 team that won the Cal Ripken Little League World Series.

At 13, he moved to the United States to attend Life Prep Academy in Wichita, Kansas, and pursue baseball more seriously. Instead of entering MLB through the traditional draft, Jazz signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an international free agent in 2015.

He was traded to the Miami Marlins organization in 2019 and made his Major League debut on September 1, 2020. Jazz quickly stood out—not only because of his speed, power and athletic ability, but because of the energy, confidence, colourful style and Bahamian pride he brought to a sport often known for its traditions.

Making Bahamian Baseball History

In 2022, Jazz became the first Bahamian-born player selected to an MLB All-Star team. The following year, he became the cover athlete for MLB The Show 23, making him the first Miami Marlins player featured on the cover of MLB’s flagship video game.

The Marlins traded him to the New York Yankees in July 2024, placing him on one of baseball’s most famous and heavily watched teams. He earned his second All-Star selection in 2025 and later became only the third player in Yankees history to record at least 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in the same season.

Jazz Is Heating Up at the Perfect Time

Jazz Chisholm Jr. recently reminded baseball fans exactly how dangerous he can be. After hitting a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning to help the Yankees defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2–1, the Bahamian star returned the following day and blasted two more home runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates, driving in five runs during an 8–5 Yankees victory. That gave Jazz three home runs across three consecutive plate appearances and marked the tenth multi-home-run game of his career. The powerful stretch came at an important time for New York, which has been playing without injured superstar Aaron Judge, and placed Jazz back in the spotlight as one of the players capable of carrying the Yankees’ offence.

An additional interesting angle is that the Yankees are back in Philadelphia tonight [July 24, 2026], the city where Jazz made an unforgettable entrance after joining New York in 2024. During his first series there as a Yankee, he hit four home runs in his first two games, immediately setting the tone for his time in pinstripes.

Giving Back to The Bahamas

Jazz has also made a deliberate effort to create opportunities for children who may be starting where he once did.

The Jazz Chisholm Foundation supports young athletes and families in The Bahamas, Florida and New York. Its work includes providing baseball and softball equipment, creating educational opportunities, teaching financial literacy and supporting community organizations.

In September 2023, the foundation launched the Jazz Chisholm Foundation Little League in Nassau. The programme initially recruited more than 200 boys and girls between the ages of five and 14, providing jerseys, backpacks and equipment at no cost. According to Jazz’s MLB biography, the league has since grown to serve more than 300 children annually.

The children are also encouraged to participate in food drives and other community projects, showing them that being an athlete should include giving back.

Jazz previously assisted with relief efforts following Hurricane Dorian, has returned home to host youth clinics and has worked with his longtime mentor Geron Sands and the International Elite Sports Academy. In 2025, his foundation’s Tunnel Fits & Kicks fashion fundraiser raised more than $200,000 for its programmes.

What Comes Next for Jazz?

The remainder of 2026 could be one of the most important stretches of Jazz’s career. He is earning $10.2 million in what may be his final season before becoming a free agent, meaning he could either receive a long-term commitment from the Yankees or test his value across Major League Baseball.

At 28, Jazz is still in his athletic prime. His future will depend largely on consistency, remaining healthy, and continuing to balance his exciting style with dependable production. However, he has already accomplished something far greater than individual statistics: he has shown Bahamian children that baseball can carry them from a local field in Nassau to the sport's biggest stage.

Growing up in The Bahamas, basketball often appeared to be the sport most young people believed could take them somewhere. Today, baseball is becoming just as important—and, in some communities, just as popular.

More parents are signing their children up for baseball programmes, practices and after-school training because they are beginning to recognize that this sport can create real opportunities. We are seeing young Bahamian players enter academies, earn scholarships, sign professional contracts and progress through international baseball systems.

That does not mean every child who picks up a bat will become the next Jazz Chisholm Jr. However, his journey gives families something tangible to look at. He did not simply dream about playing professionally; he received training, left his comfort zone, developed his talent, and worked his way through the system.

Basketball will always have an important place in Bahamian sports, but baseball should no longer be viewed as the smaller option. Jazz’s success—and his decision to invest in a new generation of players—may be helping to change the way Bahamian parents and children see the game.
