An NBA championship is the dream for basketball players around the world. But for VJ Edgecombe, there’s another basketball dream that reportedly means even more: representing The Bahamas at the Olympics.
And honestly, from this side of the water, that isn’t difficult to understand.
Recent reports say the Bahamian guard expressed that preference during a stream with Jaylen Brown. For a player who has already represented his country, it reads as another reminder of how much home means to him.
Now, a graphic circulating online attributes a response to LeBron James, questioning that priority and stressing the importance of winning championships in Philadelphia. We have not independently verified the quote attributed to James.
Still, the graphic raises a conversation worth having.
Some Bahamians seeing those words may feel that our country’s Olympic ambitions are being treated as something smaller. For us, seeing The Bahamas on that stage would carry its own enormous significance.
There is also the professional basketball perspective: fans want to know their players are committed to bringing home a championship.
But does one dream have to cancel out the other?
Saying an Olympic appearance would mean more personally is different from saying an NBA championship doesn’t matter. An athlete can want to win for his team while carrying an even deeper dream for his country.
My reading? VJ’s reported words sound like love for home. Before turning this into a clash with LeBron, though, the quote on that graphic needs confirmation.
Bahamas, what do you think?
Would seeing our country compete in Olympic basketball mean more to you than your favourite NBA team winning a title?
