Chadwick Boseman’s Estate Battle: Why His Brothers Want His Widow Removed Nearly Six Years Later

A Legacy Remembered… and Now a Family Dispute

For many fans, Chadwick Boseman will always be remembered as a humble actor who inspired millions through his work in Black Panther, 42, Marshall, and countless other performances.

So, seeing his name back in the headlines nearly six years after his passing wasn’t something many expected.

This time, however, the headlines aren’t about a movie, an award, or a tribute. They’re about a legal dispute involving his family and the administration of his estate.

According to newly filed court documents, Chadwick’s brothers, Derrick and Kevin Boseman, have petitioned a Los Angeles judge to remove his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, as the administrator of his estate. 

Why Are They Going To Court?

The petition alleges that Taylor has not completed the distribution of Chadwick’s estate despite a probate court order issued in 2022.

The filing claims there are still assets that have not been distributed or fully accounted for, including:

• Royalties from Chadwick’s work
• SAG-AFTRA residual payments
• Intellectual property and image rights
• Personal property
• Multiple bank accounts
• A reported long-term care insurance policy valued at approximately US$40,000 intended for Chadwick’s mother 

The brothers are asking the court to appoint an independent professional fiduciary to oversee the estate instead of Taylor. 

An Important Detail Many Headlines Leave Out

It’s important to remember that these are allegations contained in court filings.

At the time of writing:

• No judge has ruled that Taylor Simone Ledward mishandled the estate.
• No court has found that she concealed assets.
• The legal process is still unfolding.

Court filings represent one side’s claims—not established facts. 

Why Was The Estate Split This Way?

One of the biggest reasons this story exists is because Chadwick Boseman did not leave behind a will before his death in August 2020.

Under California probate law at the time, his estate was divided between his surviving spouse and his parents.

Taylor Simone Ledward inherited 50% of the estate and was appointed administrator, while Chadwick’s parents were each entitled to 25%. 

What Does An Estate Administrator Actually Do?

Many readers may assume an administrator “owns” the estate.

That’s not how it works.

An estate administrator has legal responsibilities that typically include:

• Identifying and protecting assets.
• Paying taxes and outstanding debts.
• Keeping financial records.
• Following court orders.
• Distributing assets to the rightful beneficiaries.

If beneficiaries believe those duties aren’t being fulfilled, they can ask the court to review the administrator’s actions—as Chadwick’s brothers have now done. 

What Happens Next?

A probate judge will ultimately decide whether:

• Taylor should remain administrator,
• the allegations have merit,
• additional accounting is required,
• or a neutral administrator should take over.

Until then, nothing has changed regarding ownership of the estate.

Reading this story, I couldn’t help but think about how quickly public attention shifts from celebrating someone’s life to sorting through legal paperwork after they’re gone.

This isn’t just another celebrity court battle. To me, it’s a reminder that no matter how successful someone becomes, failing to leave clear instructions can leave the people who loved them facing years of uncertainty.

Whether the court ultimately sides with Chadwick Boseman’s widow or with his family, one lesson is already clear: having a will isn’t just about money—it’s about reducing confusion, protecting relationships, and making your wishes known when you’re no longer here.
