What Exactly Is Aragonite?
Aragonite is a naturally occurring form of calcium carbonate, the same mineral family found in seashells, coral, limestone, and pearls.
In warm, shallow Bahamian waters, calcium carbonate can build up in layers around tiny particles. These rounded grains are known as oolites. Over long periods, enormous quantities can collect across parts of the Bahama Banks.

The Great Bahama Bank is one of the world’s best-known modern carbonate-producing environments. Scientists have studied its pale sandbanks, oolitic sediments and unusual milky-water events for decades.
The shallow waters and active sandbanks of The Bahamas create the conditions associated with oolitic carbonate formation.
Where Is It Found?
Aragonitic sediments occur throughout parts of the shallow Bahamian carbonate banks, including areas of the Great Bahama Bank.
Similar sediments and aragonite-producing environments are associated with waters near Andros, the Berry Islands, and other shallow-bank locations.
However, every white sandbank is not automatically a commercial deposit. Scientists must examine the mineral content, depth, purity, surrounding habitat, and physical conditions of each area.

Is Extraction Environmentally Safe?
Aragonite itself is natural. The environmental concern is the location, method, depth, speed, and scale of extraction.
Dredging can disturb seabed habitats, release sediment and alter the physical character of an area. The level of risk depends on the equipment used, nearby reefs or seagrass beds, currents, depth, and the strength of environmental monitoring.

Individual deposits could be depleted or damaged even if aragonitic sediments remain elsewhere. The material forms naturally, but not necessarily fast enough to replace what commercial machinery could remove. It should therefore be treated as a limited resource on a human timescale.
It can cause harm when extraction is poorly located, too aggressive or weakly monitored. Possible risks include seabed disturbance, cloudy water, habitat disruption and changes to the physical character of the site.
New carbonate material can continue to form under suitable conditions, but saying it “grows back” can be misleading. Commercial removal may happen far faster than natural replacement.

Our Natural Wealth Should Benefit Our People
The Bahamas should not be expected to leave every natural resource untouched, but neither should we rush to remove valuable material simply because someone says there is plenty of it.
The real measure of success is not how many tonnes leave our waters. It is whether Bahamians understand the agreement, whether the environment is protected, whether the country receives a fair return, and whether we build industries that allow our people to benefit beyond a handful of temporary jobs.
Aragonite may hold real economic potential. But without science, transparency, Bahamian participation and long-term planning, natural wealth can leave a country without ever truly enriching its people.
