The roots reggae community is mourning the loss of one of its most recognizable voices.

Reggae singer Fantan Mojah, born Owen Lennox Moncrieffe, has died at the age of 49, just weeks before what would have been his 50th birthday. According to multiple Jamaican media reports, the beloved Rastafarian artist passed away Tuesday evening at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) in Kingston after suffering complications related to a longstanding heart condition.  

A Sudden Turn After Signs of Recovery

Reports indicate that Fantan Mojah’s health declined rapidly over the past week after he returned from the United States. A close associate told Jamaican media that the singer had become increasingly weak and was admitted to hospital. The night before his passing, he reportedly began vomiting blood before succumbing to his illness.  

For many fans, the news is especially heartbreaking because the reggae star had appeared to be making a comeback.

In 2024, Fantan Mojah was hospitalized in Martinique after experiencing severe breathing problems and chest tightness. Reports at the time suggested his heart was functioning at only about 15% capacity, forcing him to cancel several international performances. Despite those frightening health challenges, he later recovered enough to resume touring in Europe, giving supporters hope that he had overcome the worst.

Fantan Mojah rose to international prominence with his 2005 debut album Hail the King, becoming one of the defining voices of conscious reggae during the 2000s.

His music stood apart for its powerful messages centered on:

Adding to the tragedy, Fantan Mojah had reportedly been preparing for a performance at this year’s Reggae Jam Festival in Germany, with his travel documents already approved. Few could have imagined that those plans would instead become part of the final chapter of his life.  

Tributes Begin Pouring In

As news of his passing spread, fans and members of the reggae community began sharing memories, prayers, and tributes celebrating an artist whose music never chased trends but remained rooted in purpose, spirituality, and culture.

While funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, Fantan Mojah leaves behind a lasting musical legacy that will continue to inspire generations of reggae lovers worldwide.

Let’s dive into the latest buzz surrounding Lisa Hyper. So, recently, Vybz Kartel has been splurging on luxury cars for those close to him. He gifted Shawn Storm a brand-new BMW X1, and even bought himself a Porsche valued at 33 million via social media.

But here’s the tea: despite her loyalty, Lisa Hyper didn’t receive such lavish gifts. Could this be why she’s been acting out lately? Feeling overlooked can sting, especially when others are being showered with expensive presents.

POV 🎼 Rapper KODAK BLACK: In the Bahamas for anticipated Long Walk to Freedom Tour!

After Buju Banton’s highly anticipated performance, some concertgoers left tired but fulfilled, while others were disappointed. Many had expected to see Kodak Black before the main act and assumed the rapper was a no-show.

At exactly 3:10 a.m., however, Kodak entered the venue with his arms wrapped around his mother and another woman. I could not confirm whether she was his girlfriend, but his repeated gesture of kissing both women’s hands made it clear that they were equally important to him.

A few moments later, Kodak was ready to perform for the fans who had remained at the venue waiting for him.

A DELAYED ARRIVAL

According to information shared at the venue, Kodak’s flight from Mexico to Nassau, The Bahamas, caused him to arrive more than an hour late.

Buju Banton could be seen inside his tent appearing unhappy about the delay. Production members quickly held a meeting, however, and the show continued.

Kodak performed for approximately one hour before security escorted him back to his tent.

KODAK’S ADDITION TO THE LINEUP

There was some controversy surrounding the decision to add Kodak Black, a young rapper, to a concert headlined by veteran reggae artist Buju Banton.

Still, there was a particular age group and population of fans who could not wait for Kodak to return to Bahamian soil.

Kodak had been spotted in The Bahamas during the weeks leading up to the concert. News quickly spread that he was in discussions with the production company to become part of the major event.

The Bahamas marked the second stop on the Long Walk to Freedom Tour, following the opening concert in Buju Banton’s hometown of Kingston, Jamaica.

THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM BAHAMAS

The Bahamian installment of the Long Walk to Freedom Tour was presented by Paradise Productions.

Although the company may have been unfamiliar to some members of the public, Paradise Productions had been operating for years and was connected to several reggae concerts throughout the Caribbean. The Long Walk to Freedom Bahamas may have been one of its largest and most successful events at the time.

Buju Banton was released from federal prison in the United States on December 8, 2018, after serving eight years. His highly anticipated comeback had been discussed and promoted well in advance, prompting many fans to book travel and accommodations as soon as the concert date was announced.

The Long Walk to Freedom Bahamas featured performances from Kodak Black, Lil Duval, Nigerian music sensation Davido, Jamaican DJ Ritchie Feelings and reggae singer Glen Washington.

Bahamian performers included Willis and the Illest, DJ Ignite, DJ Studda, Mix-A-Lot, Jah Hem and several others.

Fortunately for me, I had the opportunity to meet Kodak and take a photo with him.

Throughout the night, he appeared to be in a great mood. He was funny, sweet and extremely patient.

While we were trying to take our selfies, my phone rang twice. Kodak jokingly said, “Wow! R.J. is really checking on you. Take it again!”😅

He then flashed his signature smile and grillz—and the rest is history.

Beres Hammond set the stage on fire at Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival - 2017. Performing many of his greatest hits, "I Could Beat Myself", "Standing In My Way", "Tempted To Touch" just to name a few. 

The crowd was mesmerized as they moved and grooved to the sweet reggae music; couples held each other tighter and folks near and far could be heard singing word for word to every song. 
Hammond is no stranger to The Bahamas, but every performance felt like the first time. 

After the show, I had the privilege of visiting Beres in his tent; where he was unwinding after the long performance. 
I questioned the timing, but his million dollar smile greeted me, and he stood to his feet. 

We were graciously introduced by a long time friend and member of his security team; I expressed to him how much I loved his music and was so happy to have finally met him.

A photo was taken as "The Love Doctor" embraced me as if he knew me for years. It was an unforgettable night.

Hammond celebrated his 64th birthday on August 28th, with a grand-style party. His family and friends gave surprise tributes and performances. Beres thanked all his fans for the well wishes saying:

"I want to take this moment to thank you for ALL of the loving birthday wishes that are being sent to me today. Wishing I could personally thank each and every one of you personally. Your love is everything to me. Humbled."
