REV. AL SHARPTON, BENJAMIN CRUMP, NOLAN’S FAMILY AND A COMMUNITY OF SUPPORTERS GATHERED TO HONOR THE 18-YEAR-OLD—TURNING A DAY OF GRIEF INTO A POWERFUL CALL FOR ANSWERS AND JUSTICE.
The homegoing service for Nolan Xavier Wells was powerful, emotional and filled with purpose.
Family members, former teammates, classmates, community leaders and supporters gathered at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, dressed in blue to celebrate the life of the 18-year-old college football player whose death after a July 4 trip to Horn Island continues to raise unanswered questions.
Although the service was filled with grief, it was not centered solely on how Nolan died. It focused on how he lived—as a loving son, protective brother, loyal friend, gifted athlete and young man who made others feel welcomed and valued.
Throughout the service, one message stood above the rest:
“Nolan's Life Matter.”
Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, described her son as a gentle and calming presence who had a special ability to make people feel seen.
“He had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed and valued. He could lift your confidence with just a few words and make you feel like you belong.”
She encouraged those attending the service to carry Nolan’s kindness forward.
“In a world that can often feel dark, be like Nolan. Be the light that brightens the lives of those around you. Be the warmth for those who may be feeling the coldness of the world. Love deeply, protect fiercely, and welcome others with kindness.”
Nolan’s father, Elmore Wonsley, remembered the time they spent watching football and practicing together on the beach. He affectionately called his son “Mr. Cool Hands” because Nolan appeared capable of catching a touchdown pass in nearly every game.
Their words reminded everyone that Nolan was much more than a name connected to a developing investigation. He was a beloved son with dreams, talent, personality and a future his family fully expected him to live.
The Rev. Al Sharpton delivered a forceful eulogy that combined faith, comfort and an unmistakable demand for truth.
Sharpton addressed the hateful accusations suggesting that he and civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump were financially benefiting from Nolan’s case.
“First of all, I don’t get any money in any of what we do. Most of the cases that you have seen us do, we help to pay the funerals and all of that, and never ask for a dime back, even if they got settlements.”
Rather than allowing the criticism to distract from Nolan, Sharpton turned the moment into action.
On behalf of the National Action Network, he announced a $50,000 reward for information that helps uncover the truth about what happened to Nolan Wells.
Shortly afterward, filmmaker Tyler Perry, who had already covered Nolan’s funeral expenses, reportedly sent Sharpton a message saying he would match the reward. Perry’s contribution increased the total reward to $100,000. (Atlanta Black Star)
The announcement sent a direct message to anyone who may have photographs, videos, messages or firsthand knowledge of Nolan’s final hours:

During his call for justice, attorney Benjamin Crump thanked the many people who have supported Nolan’s family—both publicly and privately.
Some donors and supporters allowed their names to be announced. Others reportedly assisted the family while choosing to remain anonymous.
Among the publicly recognized supporters was Tyler Perry, who paid Nolan’s funeral expenses after reaching out to the family.
Former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick, through his Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative, funded the independent autopsy requested by Nolan’s family. The independent examination was arranged as the family continued seeking answers separate from the state’s investigation. (People.com)
Media businessman Byron Allen also donated $100,000 directly to the family’s fundraiser. That contribution was separate from the $100,000 reward announced during the funeral. (Variety)
Crump’s acknowledgment made it clear that Nolan’s family has not been left to carry the financial, emotional and legal weight of this tragedy alone.
Nolan’s homegoing was attended by relatives, friends, teammates and national figures, including filmmaker Spike Lee and former NFL player Terrell Owens.
The service celebrated Nolan’s brightest moments through family memories, photographs, music and stories of the warmth he brought into the lives of others. His former football teammates attended together, honoring a young man remembered as both an athlete and a friend. (AP News)
Yet beneath the celebration remained the painful reality that Nolan’s family still does not fully know what happened to him after he traveled to Horn Island on July 4.
Nolan did not return to the mainland with the friends who transported him to the island. His body was discovered two days later near the island’s coast.
Authorities have said the investigation remains active, while Nolan’s family and legal team continue to question inconsistencies surrounding his reported decision to remain behind, the handling of his cellphone and keys, and conflicting accounts of whether he intended to leave with his original group. The words “Nolan's Life Matter” became more than a hashtag during the homegoing.
They represented a declaration that Nolan’s life will not be reduced to speculation, rumors or an unexplained conclusion.
His life mattered before the national interviews.
His life mattered before celebrity supporters became involved.
His life mattered before his name became a hashtag.
And his family’s questions matter now.
The movement surrounding Nolan is not simply about assigning guilt before evidence is established. It is about demanding that every photograph, video, witness statement, digital record and conflicting account be examined thoroughly before any final determination is accepted.
The service celebrated a young man remembered for his gentle spirit, contagious smile, athletic ability and gift for making others feel valued. It also placed the people who may know something about his final hours on notice.
There is now a $100,000 reward for information, a legal team continuing its independent work and a family supported by people across the country who refuse to let Nolan’s story simply disappear.
Nolan Xavier Wells mattered. His family deserves answers. And until the complete truth is known, the call will continue: Nolan's Life Matter. 🕊
