Chris Brown Ordered to Pay Nearly $13 Million After Housekeeper Was Mauled by His Security Dog

For years, this case quietly worked its way through the courts, but now the verdict is in—and it’s a costly one.

A California jury has ordered Chris Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, to pay nearly $13 million to his former housekeeper, Maria Avila, after she was brutally attacked by one of the singer’s security dogs at his Tarzana home back in December 2020.  

According to court testimony, Maria was simply taking out the trash when Hades, a roughly 200-pound Caucasian Shepherd used for security, allegedly charged at her without warning. The attack was horrific.

Maria told jurors the dog ripped away large portions of skin from her face and left arm, leaving her permanently disfigured. She later underwent multiple surgeries, including skin grafts taken from her own abdomen, and testified that the injuries left her unable to return to work as a housekeeper. She also said she continues to deal with nerve damage, mobility issues, vision problems, and emotional trauma years later.  

The trial took another dramatic turn when Chris Brown testified about what happened after the attack. Brown admitted he found Maria lying in the driveway covered in blood, but said he panicked. He told the jury he left the property before emergency responders arrived because he feared creating a “media circus” and didn’t want his voice connected to a 911 call. Brown said he left after his manager advised him to do so. That admission quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the trial.  

Brown argued that Maria and her sister had previously been warned not to go outside alone because several of the dogs on the property were aggressive and should only be approached with security personnel present. Maria denied ever receiving those warnings, leaving jurors to decide whose version they believed.  

After hearing weeks of testimony, the jury sided largely with Maria.

The final judgment awarded:

• $12.9 million to Maria Avila for her injuries.
• $885,000 to her sister, Patricia Avila, for emotional distress after witnessing the aftermath.
• $50,000 to Maria’s husband, Oscar Olivo.  

Ironically, the verdict came just days after Chris Brown kicked off his highly anticipated tour with Usher, putting another legal headline in front of fans at a time when many expected the focus to be entirely on music.  

This case raises a much bigger conversation than celebrity drama.

If you own a dog—especially one bred and trained for protection—you also own the responsibility that comes with it. Security dogs aren’t family pets in the traditional sense. They’re powerful animals capable of causing life-changing injuries in seconds, which means the people around them must be protected just as much as the property they’re guarding.

The other part that has people talking is Chris Brown’s testimony. Whether he left because he panicked, followed advice, or genuinely feared the media frenzy, many people are asking the same question: Should your first instinct in a life-or-death emergency be protecting your image or helping the person who was just attacked?

It’s a question the internet will probably be debating long after this lawsuit is over.
